It was a spectacular political comeback that lifted markets and elicited plaudits from all around the world when the news that Donald J. By the time he returns to Washington as the 47th president, his party will have firmly established control of the Senate, after having been in the minority for the previous four years. This will make it easier for him to appoint supporters who have already shown themselves in his cabinet and other high-level positions inside the administration.

The Republicans are still fighting to maintain their slender majority in the House of Representatives. The result may influence the extent to which Mr. Trump is willing to go with his legislative agenda; nevertheless, he has pledged to carry out a significant number of his proposals regardless of whether or not Congress is in agreement with them.
